Growing Saffron in the Southern Hemisphere – Everything You Need to Know

Can Saffron Be Grown in the Southern Hemisphere?

We often receive inquiries at sativus.com about whether our high-quality Crocus sativus corms can be cultivated in the Southern Hemisphere. The answer is a resounding YES! If your country has the right climate, you can successfully grow saffron there.

In fact, we have many satisfied customers in the Southern Hemisphere who have successfully cultivated saffron using our premium corms.

🌱 Success Stories:

  • A few years ago, we assisted a New Zealand customer in establishing a saffron farm using our corms and expertise. Today, this farm has grown into New Zealand’s largest saffron producer and one of the top saffron suppliers in Oceania.
  • We also have loyal customers in South Africa, Australia, and South America, all of whom have successfully harvested high-quality saffron using our Dutch-grown corms.

Special Treatment for Southern Hemisphere Corms

Because our corms are cultivated in the Netherlands, they follow a growth cycle adapted to the Northern Hemisphere. To ensure successful planting in the Southern Hemisphere, our corms undergo a special temperature treatment before shipment.

📅 How the Preparation Works:
1️⃣ Harvest in the Netherlands (July-August): After harvesting, the corms are stored in climate-controlled facilities.
2️⃣ Temperature Regulation (August – February): We carefully keep the corms dormant until their optimal planting time in the Southern Hemisphere.
3️⃣ Bridging Seasonal Differences: This process allows us to ship the corms at the right time for planting between December and February.

This treatment ensures that your Crocus sativus corms arrive in perfect condition, ready to thrive in their new environment.
