About us

Buy Crocus sativus from Bloembollenbedrijf J.C.Koot

Sativus.com is owned by Bloembollenbedrijf J.C. Koot, a leading wholesaler of saffron bulbs in the Netherlands. We first encountered the unique Crocus crop in the 1980s. While initially growing various flower bulb crops, we soon realized that our future lay in Crocus sativus. We began specializing in saffron crocus and expanded our nursery to focus on this crop. Today, we supply Crocus sativus saffron bulbs to over 50 countries worldwide.

Thanks to our decades of experience, we understand everything about saffron cultivation. We provide you with the perfect foundation so you can buy saffron crocus bulbs with confidence and grow your own high-quality saffron.

Why You Should Grow Your Own Saffron

Growing your own saffron gives you access to the freshest, highest-quality spice directly from your garden. While store-bought saffron is readily available, it can come with uncertainty about its cultivation process, potential additives, or chemicals.

By growing saffron from our Crocus sativus bulbs, you have complete control over the growing process, ensuring a pure and natural product. Even with a small garden, you can harvest this valuable spice at a fraction of the cost. Additionally, saffron offers both culinary and health benefits, making it a great addition to your home garden.

Growing Instructions

The difference between organic and conventional Crocus sativus corms lies in their cultivation methods. Organic saffron corms are grown entirely without the use of chemical plant protection products, following strict organic practices. These saffron corms are organic certified, ensuring they meet European organic standards. You can view our organic certificate here.

On the other hand, conventional saffron corms are cultivated sustainably, with minimal use of chemical crop protection products.

There is no difference in the quality of saffron produced by either type of corm, but saffron from organic corms can officially be labeled as organic saffron.

As you may have already discovered, we offer organic and conventional saffron bulbs in our webshop.

If you're looking for a completely chemical-free option, our organic certified saffron bulbs are the ideal choice, ensuring your saffron is grown without the use of chemical plant protection products.

However, if you're seeking a more affordable option, our conventional bulbs are a bit cheaper and are cultivated sustainably with minimal use of chemical crop protection. Both types produce saffron of equal quality, so the choice depends on your preferences and growing approach.

In addition to the choice between conventional and organic Crocus sativus bulbs, you can choose from different bulb sizes. The larger the bulb size, the better and more flowering the bulbs will give in the first year after planting. In addition, larger bulbs develop faster and better, so that the flowering percentage will increase in subsequent years.

Crocus sativus bulbs are harvested annually at the end of June or the beginning of July. After harvesting and processing, the bulbs undergo a special temperature treatment to ensure the highest quality before being prepared for sale. We supply saffron bulbs from the end of July through September. Due to the plant’s growth cycle, deliveries are not available after September until the next harvest.

However, from November to July, you can place a preorder through our webshop to secure your saffron bulbs for the next season. Orders are processed in the order they are received and shipped as soon as possible after harvesting and treatment.

Deliveries outside the regular season are only available for customers in the Southern Hemisphere, but these saffron bulbs must be ordered in advance before preparation to ensure they are properly conditioned for the opposite climate.
