In recent years we at sativus.com have received many questions about whether our quality Crocus sativus saffron corms can also be grown in countries in the southern hemisphere.
We can positively confirm this question, YES, if your country is in the southern hemisphere and has the right climate, you can grow saffron there without any problems.
For example, a few years ago we helped a customer in New Zealand to start a saffron nursery with the help of our saffron corms and knowledge. This nursery has grown into the largest saffron company in New Zealand and is one of the most important saffron suppliers in Oceania.
We also have several satisfied customers in South Africa, Australia and South America who successfully grow saffron with our high quality corms.
Special preparation of our Crocus sativus Saffron corms
Because our corms are grown in the Netherlands and the growth cycle of the corms is adapted to the climate in the Northern Hemisphere, the corms must undergo a special temperature treatment before they can be sent to customers in the Southern Hemisphere.
This special preparation starts in August, a few weeks after we have harvested the Crocus sativus corms in the Netherlands. The preparation of the Crocus corms is done in our climate-controlled facilities, where we can keep the corms dormant until February at the latest. Thanks to this treatment, we are able to bridge the seasonal differences and deliver the corms to our customers in the southern hemisphere at the right time for planting.
